Debary FL Area Guide

Debary FL SealDeBary is located on the northern shore of the St. Johns River. DeBary is the gateway to southwestern Volusia County and serves as a corridor between Orlando, Sanford, and Daytona Beach. DeBary has a population of 18,869 people within an area of 25 square miles. Its warm atmosphere, thousands of oak trees and friendly residents make this city inviting and welcoming.

DeBary History

Debary FL HallLong before the Spanish arrived in Florida, the Timucuan Indians were the first to inhabit the area of Lake Monroe. By 1760, the Seminole tribe had moved from Alabama and Georgia began to the area of Florida where DeBary is now found. Florida was acquired from Spain in 1821 by the United States, with the Seminole Wars delaying settlement in the area. In 1866 a man by the name of Elijah Watson sold land on the northern shore of the St. Johns River on Lake Monroe to Oliver and Amanda Arnett, where they built a house. They sold 400 acres to a man named Frederick DeBary who was a wine merchant from New York City. He built a hunting lodge and named it DeBary Hall. He also built many orange groves and pecan trees on his land. DeBary was finally incorporated in 1993, and was named after their first settler.
